DennyL , Dec 26, Finally got the Ackles Collector's Choice stuff. Great stuff, really moody with terrific almost literary quality lyrics, almost theatrical in parts. I think fans of "lost" folk-rock type albums a la Judee Sill, Nick Drake et. I find the sound quality on the Collector's Choice CDs to be simply excellent.
Not compressed, not no-noised, not heavily EQ-ed though I don't have anything to compare against, they still sound very natural. Will chime in when that one comes. Thumbs way up! Location: Los Angeles. A wonderful person, with extraordinary talent. CybrKhatru , Mar 7, Location: in Europe, under headphones.
Has anybody here actually heard Five and Dime? So far I've never come around a copy of the original LP Location: Freiburg, Germany. Down River is one of those little pieces of magic. Location: Cambridge, MA. One of my all-time favorite artists. It's a huge shame that he never connected commercially and that he went into what turned into permanent retirement from the music biz after his fourth album. He died a few years ago. I think American Gothic is one of the best albums ever made.
A lot of critics had similar assessments when it was released His first, self-titled album is next best, and it's also great. Then I'd pick Five and Dime, which is a bit patchy but has some brilliant songs. Finally, there's Subway to the Country, the disappointing followup to the stellar debut. It's OK, and it has its moments, but not nearly as many as any of his other albums. I have the German CD reissues from the early '90s, and they are fine.
I haven't heard the CC reissues. I am less enthused about the bonus tracks on the Raven reissue, since they're covers and not David Ackles material. But they're better than nothing. They also point out that Ackles was usually the best interpreter of his own material.Love Die Antwoord. This album is the one that has the most of my favorite songs (I Fink U Freely, Fatty Boom Boom, Baby's on Fire, Fok Julle Naaiers), and now I have a couple more fave songs from the album. I love the crazy beats and rhymes. I love how Die Antwoord mixes Afrikaans into their lyrics/5().
